Florida Residency KitEducational guide

How do I become a Florida resident?

Step 1. Florida driver's license

Step 2. Florida voter registration card

Step 3. County requirements

Each county may adjust what Florida residency means, so the requirements are county specific. Don't assume that just getting a Florida driver's license and a voter registration card will establish your residency.

You do not have to own the home in order to establish Florida residency. Coming to Florida, renting a home, and going through your county's steps to establish residency needs to be done by December 31, 2026. That will put you on the fast path, which lets you get the larger homestead exemption as soon as the year after you establish home ownership.

To get the step-by-step guide on how to become a Florida resident, choose one of the Florida Residency Kits
